English Language Arts

This week, students will focus on spelling, grammar, and writing skills. Spelling words and grammar will be assessed this Friday. Please note that students are provided individualized spelling lists for their test.  Groups are determined according to a pre-assessment which allows a student to work at his/her ability while also being challenged. Please see your child’s paper copy to determine their assigned word group. Please use these words to complete the spelling contract located on the back of the Weekly Spelling assignment.

Weekly Spelling Homework due 11/4/22 (Spelling List 5, Contract 1)

Every week (beginning on Saturday) our third graders have a goal of earning at least 2 trophies on Edmentum Reading. We work on this goal in the classroom, but not all students have it finished by the due date of the following Friday. Please ask your child throughout the week about their progress toward their 2 trophy goal. Trophies are earned when students do well on the Progress Check.

Your child will be taking the M-STEP assessment this Spring. M-STEP is a 21st Century online test. It is designed to gauge how well students are mastering state standards. Also, the State of Michigan will be using this assessment to target students who will be retained in third grade. A passing score on the ELA M-STEP is a 1300, however, if your child scores a 1252 or lower, your child will automatically receive a retention letter from the State. In order to help prepare your child to do his/her best on this state assessment, we have some planned activities that take place both at home and at school.

Starting on Friday, November 4th, third graders will bring home 10 M-STEP vocabulary words to study at home and an extra credit crossword puzzle. If students complete and return the extra credit crossword puzzle, they will earn 1 extra credit point on the quiz. On Fridays, the students will be quizzed on these words. Starting in Winter Break, after the students have had time to get use to studying for the words and taking the quiz- when your child earns a 80% or better on Friday’s quiz, he/she will earn a charm for his/her M-STEP charm necklace, which is an ongoing reflection of their accomplishments. Every Friday your child will bring home M-STEP vocabulary words and he/she will be quizzed on the following Friday.

Also, after the students take the Winter NWEA assessment (end of January), students who reach their personal growth goal or the grade level norm will be rewarded during an assembly.

Starting on Friday, December 2nd, your child’s weekly homework will be M-STEP practice packets. If your child earns 80% or better on their M-STEP practice weekly homework, they will also earn a charm towards their M-STEP charm necklace. Homework packets will be sent home on Friday and will be due back to school by the next Thursday.

Thank you for your continued support at home.

Below you will find this week’s vocabulary list of words in addition to the extra credit activity to help your child study.

Math

Please remember that mastery of multiplication and division facts is the goal for the end of third grade. The report card will be marked accordingly. Students should be completing a session of ReflexMath daily. We try to fit it in during the school day, but this is not always possible. Please remind your child after school in case it hasn’t been completed yet for the day. So far, here are the classroom stats:

Congrats to Patrick for mastering his addition and subtraction facts in ReflexMath. Patrick will now move on to multiplication and division. Way to go, Patrick! Keep up the great work.

Message from Art

We are in need of small containers to support our artists:
-egg cartons
-clean, shallow containers like yogurt or applesauce cups
-clean, divided containers from frozen meals or snack packs
– shallow, clean foam trays
No need to make any purchases, but if you have any of these items around the house, we will take them! 🙂  Please send to the  art room or place in one of our mailboxes at any building.
Thank you for your support of our artists and art program!

Guidelines for Cold Weather Gear

In an effort to keep our students safe and healthy, please plan to send your child to school with the following gear based on morning temperatures. Please keep in mind that we do have an outside recess in the morning when the temperatures are much chillier than later in the day.

Weekly Reminders

  1. Students should bring charged chromebooks to school each day.
  2. Water bottles are helpful to stay hydrated. These should only contain plain water.
  3. Wear rubber-soled tennis shoes on gym days in order to participate.
  4. Students may bring a small snack to enjoy before recess. The snack should be one portion due to limited eating time. Juice or other sugary drinks are not allowed. Students may bring water bottles for snack time.
  5. If it is supposed to sprinkle or light rain, we will still be going outside. Your child may want to bring an umbrella or wear a raincoat on these days. Please have your child dress appropriately for the weather (see above).
