English Language Arts

In an effort to reinforce learning before MSTEP, third graders will be reviewing skills, such as homophones, similes and metaphors, and greek and latin roots. Students will explore these concepts through read alouds, videos, songs, games, EdPuzzle assignments and MSTEP practice questions. If your child is absent, please have them check Google Classroom to review these concepts.

Our ELA MSTEP will take place on April 25-26.

Your child will be taking the M-STEP assessment this Spring. M-STEP is a 21st Century online test. It is designed to gauge how well students are mastering state standards. Also, the State of Michigan will be using this assessment to target students who will be retained in third grade. A passing score on the ELA M-STEP is a 1300, however, if your child scores a 1252 or lower, your child will automatically receive a retention letter from the State. In order to help prepare your child to do his/her best on this state assessment, we have some planned activities that take place both at home and at school.

Starting on Friday, November 4th, third graders will bring home 10 M-STEP vocabulary words to study at home and an extra credit crossword puzzle. If students complete and return the extra credit crossword puzzle, they will earn 1 extra credit point on the quiz. On Fridays, the students will be quizzed on these words. Starting in Winter Break, after the students have had time to get use to studying for the words and taking the quiz- when your child earns a 80% or better on Friday’s quiz, he/she will earn a charm for his/her M-STEP charm necklace, which is an ongoing reflection of their accomplishments. Every Friday your child will bring home M-STEP vocabulary words and he/she will be quizzed on the following Friday.

Also, after the students take the Winter NWEA assessment (end of January), students who reach their personal growth goal or the grade level norm will be rewarded during an assembly.

Starting on Friday, December 2nd, your child’s weekly homework will be M-STEP practice packets. If your child earns 80% or better on their M-STEP practice weekly homework, they will also earn a charm towards their M-STEP charm necklace. Homework packets will be sent home on Friday and will be due back to school by the next Thursday.

Thank you for your continued support at home.

Below you will find this week’s vocabulary list of words in addition to the extra credit activity to help your child study.

Message from Art

Greetings from the Art Room!

Please be on the lookout for a Square 1 Art catalog in your child’s backpack.  This catalog contains all of the information that you will need to order their beautiful artwork on any Square 1 Art featured product!  The catalog also contains 1 large and 4 small FREE STICKERS of their original art design.  These stickers are located on the front and back of the catalog directly below the access code and order information.

The order process is so easy!  All you need to do is scan the access code on the catalog and begin shopping!  All proceeds from our fundraiser will be used in the art room for special projects, equipment and three dimensional art materials!

We began this project in January, and the students have worked so hard on their springtime artwork. They are so proud and excited to finally share it with you at home!

The order deadline is Thursday April 20th!  The orders are scheduled to arrive early May, hopefully in time for Mother’s Day, Father’s Day and summertime fun!

If you have any questions, please reach out to your child’s art teacher:

Rachel Trapani – trapani@appublicschools.com (Roller, Pushman, Amonette, Guyot, Huntington, Zuke only)

Elisabeth Cunningham – cunningham@appublicschools.com (all other Arno classes not listed above)

Thank you for supporting our art program!

Sincerely,

Ms. Trapani and Mrs. Cunningham

Field Trip to Michigan Outdoor Adventure Center

The third grade classes will be going to the Michigan DNR Outdoor Adventure Center in Detroit to learn more about Michigan’s outdoors. This field trip will take place Wednesday, May 17th. We will leave Arno at 9:30am and return by 12:10pm in time for lunch.

The student cost is $6. The cost per chaperone is $2. All chaperones will need to meet us at the Outdoor Adventure Center (1801 Atwater St. Detroit, MI 48207). A parking lot is located on property for your convenience. Student permission slips are due by Wednesday, May 3rd. Here is a copy to print if needed: MI OAC Parental Permission Slip

Please note that each class will be attending a 45-60min learning session that is limited to teachers and students ONLY. You will be able to explore the Outdoor Adventure Center kid-free at this time.

If you would like to chaperone, please notify your child’s teacher. An iCHAT Background Check form will be provided if you do not already have one on file. The iCHAT Background Check form and a copy of the driver’s license MUST be submitted by Friday, April 21st in order to give enough time for papers to be processed. Late forms will not be accepted. Here is a copy of the form to print for your convenience: Volunteer Background Check Authorization Form

Please understand that if you are able to volunteer as a chaperone your attention must be on your assigned students at all times. For the safety of our students, we are unable to allow other children or adults without a background check to attend as part of our group. Thank you in advance for your understanding.
