Dress Code & Personal Hygiene

As the weather is now starting to warm up, please refer to dress code as far as appropriate shorts/shorts length at school.  If there is questionable attire on a student, they will be asked to call home for a change of clothes.  Thank you for your assistance in this.

In addition, please remember that personal hygiene plays a critical role in promoting a positive self-image. All of our students benefit tremendously from good hygiene as it raises their confidence and makes them feel good about themselves. When our students feel good about themselves, it makes it easier for them to overcome the challenges that they encounter both in and outside of school.

Weekly Reading

Each week, your child is assigned reading material for the week. This assignment will be in the form of an electronic article using ReadWorks (login info is in your child’s planner) or an issue of Scholastic News. Your child is required to read and answer questions that are Common Core based. Similar questions will appear on the NWEA test. The electronic submission or separate questions worksheet is due by the following Thursday. All short answer questions MUST be answered in complete sentences and contain proper punctuation in order to earn credit. It is required that students mark text evidence for their answers in the issue of Scholastic News. This is a great comprehension strategy to verify accurate answers. If your child doesn’t submit or return the reading homework by Thursday, he/she will stay in from Friday Rewards to complete the assignment.

Summer Tutoring

As we start making summer vacation plans, please also think about making a plan for your child to retain all of their knowledge from this school year. I am attaching a tutor list put out by Allen Park Public Schools. You may choose to contact one of the individuals listed; however, payment will have to be determined by your tutor of choice. More summer work resources to come as we near the end of the year.

Kudos!!!!!

Congratulations to our fourth graders for ROCKING the MSTEP this year. Our additional preparation efforts were intense, but seemed to pay off in the end! Woohoo!

Many thanks to the parents that supported student efforts at home with studying MSTEP vocabulary and completing weekly MSTEP homework packets.

While some may disagree with standardized testing, it is our reality until something changes. Our student effort and scores on these tests are what families moving into the area are looking for…a place where their child can receive the best education possible. Thanks again for helping with our school-wide efforts.

MSU Sea Grant Field Trip 2018         Image result for glep boat

In June, our fourth grade class will be participating in the Great Lakes Education Program through Michigan State University and its Sea Grant Program.  Below is some information about the program.

  • The Great Lakes Education Program (GLEP) introduces fourth-grade students to the unique features of the Great Lakes through a combination of classroom learning and hands-on experience. The program is designed to stimulate interest in the Great Lakes and help students understand their role in protecting these vital freshwater resources.
  • More than 40,000 students, teachers, adult chaperones and volunteers in southeast Michigan have participated in the Great Lakes Education Program since it began in 1991.
  • Educational Relevance
The Great Lakes Education Program is part of an approved science curriculum for fourth-grade students and addresses an important need. Studies have shown that fourth grade students in Michigan generally have little understanding of the Great Lakes and local water resources. GLEP helps bridge this gap and prepare students for their roles as future decision-makers responsible for the state’s natural resources.

For more information, go to www.glep.us.

The field trip permission slip and money are due Friday, May 24th. The cost of the trip is $15.  This is an amazing educational opportunity for our students and has proven to be a favorite field trip for 4th grade students, teachers, and parents each year.  Our class field trip will take place on Monday, June 3rd..

Many thanks to the individuals who expressed interest in chaperoning this trip. Due to boat regulations, only a few chaperones will be able to accompany us. I will pull chaperone names on Friday, May 17th. So far, the following names have been submitted for the raffle:
