**ReadWorks**

Our next ReadWorks article is “Why Are Pollinators Important?. It was assigned on Tuesday, April 28th and will be due on Monday, May 4th.

Please encourage your child to read the article, use the digital tools to mark up the text, and find evidence when answering the questions. We are also encouraging students to complete any short answer questions (if any) using complete sentences by restating the question in their answer. As a class, we will practice test taking strategies while reviewing the answers to the questions together. Students earning less than an 80% will then be provided an opportunity to revise their answers. We are trying to not only encourage students to be more thoughtful when answering questions the first time, but also allowing students to use the modeled strategies in future ReadWorks article assignments. Students that pay attention during the review will do well with this weekly assignment.

**Weekly Homework**

Below is your child’s weekly homework assignment. If your student happens to misplace this assignment, one will always be posted in the blog to print an additional copy. In addition, students are strengthening their time management skills. Please do not wait until the last minute to complete this.

This homework assignment was sent home Friday, May 1st. Please stress the skills of reading the passages and looking back in the story to answer the questions. Feel free to “mark-up the text” to show evidence of answers. We are encouraging students to complete any short answer questions (if any) using complete sentences by restating the question in their answer. Thank you!

MSTEP Homework Packet #19 due 5/7

**IXL**

This year’s focus for IXL is mastering skills. Students are encouraged to master 2 skills in the area of reading and 2 in the area of math. Skill mastery is earned by completing a smart score of 100 on any of the differentiated skills. Students were also shown how to check if they met their skill goals using the Analytics menu. Please encourage your child to focus on one subject area at a time. Please do not assist your child with this task. This program is set at your child’s level. If they get answers correct when assisted by an adult, the questions will become too difficult too quickly which will raise a student’s frustration level. When students struggle, not only are we building grit, but also the program will adjust to a lower academic level.

Each month, one student from each class is recognized for accomplishing the most mastered skills.  Grades 2-5 also compete in monthly skill mastery challenges. Grade levels can earn rewards, such as board game time, Blookit time, pj day, hat day, extra recess, etc.

Needed: Field Day Group Leader Volunteers

Chaperones will be responsible for supervising a small group of third or fourth grade students as they rotate through different Field Day stations. Field Day is a highlight of the school year, and your support helps make it a successful and enjoyable experience for all students. If you are interested in volunteering, please complete the volunteer sign up before June 3rd.

An iCHAT Background Check for the 2025/2026 school year is required to volunteer for Field Day. Here is the link for your convenience: https://app.informedk12.com/link_campaigns/ichat?token=hirxsVorRcxrZnNJY1j3ta8F

Attendance Update

The following calendars show attendance for the month of April. Stickers were added to the calendar when 90% of students were present (this is 24 out of 26 students; only 2 absent students allowed). Hooray to Mrs. Warneck’s class for reaching the goal of a complete April calendar full of stickers!!! This classroom earned a movie with popcorn. Congrats!

The expectation for each day in the month of May is for 90% of students present (this is 24 out of 26 students; only 2 absent students allowed). If the goal of a full calendar of stickers is achieved, the classroom will earn popsicles and an extra recess.

M-STEP Is Coming!

Dear Family,

This spring, our student will once again be taking the State of Michigan M-STEP assessment. The
Michigan Student Test of Education Progress (M-STEP) is aligned to Michigan’s challenging learning
standards, and includes multiple-choice questions and more questions that require problem-solving
and critical thinking skills. It is administered each spring to students to ensure all students are
learning and receiving a high-quality education. The M-STEP window and dates are listed below.
English Language Arts (including Reading, Writing, and Listening) and Mathematics will be
assessed in grades 3-5, Science and Social Studies in grade 5.

Although this year’s M-STEP schedule affords our school some scheduling flexibility, we ask that you
please avoid scheduling appointments or vacations during the testing window. Students will be
testing before lunch as often as possible. Specific test dates for your child’s grade are below.

ALL testing starts at 9:15

There are several websites that may be helpful to families to provide additional information about
the M-STEP.

● Overview of the M-STEP test in ELA and Math

We have worked hard to prepare our staff and students for this year’s M-STEP assessment and are
confident that students will perform their best during all testing sessions. Each first testing date
listed, every student in the classes being tested will be provided a snack before beginning their
session. If you have any questions regarding the M-STEP assessment, please feel free to contact me.

Smart Phone/ Smart Watch Update

If possible, please keep cell phones and smart watches at home. If this is not possible, please remind your child that all devices must be kept in their backpack and turned off during the school day. This includes both cell phones and smart watches.

Mr. Zielinski shared this regarding the policy on smart watches and phones:

Attendance Update

The following calendars show attendance for the month of March. Stickers were added to the calendar when 90% of students were present (this is 24 out of 26 students; only 2 absent students allowed). Hooray to Mrs. Warneck’s class for reaching the goal of a complete March calendar full of stickers!!! This classroom earned a hat day on Friday, April 10th. Congrats!

The expectation for each day in the month of April is for 90% of students present (this is 24 out of 26 students; only 2 absent students allowed). If the goal of a full calendar of stickers is achieved, the classroom will earn a popcorn and movie.

**ReadWorks**

Our next ReadWorks article is “Keisha Smiles”. It was assigned on Tuesday, March 17th and will be due on Monday, March 23rd.

This homework assignment was sent home Friday, March 20th. Please stress the skills of reading the passages and looking back in the story to answer the questions. Feel free to “mark-up the text” to show evidence of answers. We are encouraging students to complete any short answer questions (if any) using complete sentences by restating the question in their answer. Thank you!

MSTEP Homework Packet #14 due 3/26

**MSTEP Preparation**

On Fridays, third graders should bring home 10 M-STEP vocabulary words to study at home and an extra credit crossword puzzle. On the following Friday, the students will be quizzed on these words (unless it is a shortened week and the new date is provided on the word list). Wanted: Third Grade Student Leaders

Kiwanis Club was so generous and provided the funding for the program fee for the Environmental Interpretive Center Field Trip. We would like to share with the Kiwanis Club what their funding allowed us to experience during our Environmental Interpretive Center field trips. If you and your child would be willing to attend the Kiwanis Club meeting on Tuesday, March 24th at Allen Park High School in the Media Center at 6:00 pm to present this experience, this would be a great opportunity to be a third grade leader. This commitment would require your child to write down 2-3 sentences about their field trip experience and read it aloud during the meeting. We have asked Kiwanis to dismiss the students once they have presented to allow for other planned evening activities. If interested, please click on this link:

Third Trimester Reminders

Water Bottles

Please keep all water bottles with external straws, such as Stanley tumblers, at home. These water bottles are not spill-proof, and they are creeping back into our classrooms and causing interruptions due to spills. Approved water bottles should only contain plain water, not flavored.

Snack

A morning snack time is planned for our grade level as we participate in last lunch, which is at 12:30pm. When selecting a snack for your child, please choose items that will help fill their tummy until their regular lunch time. Great options include fruits, vegetables, cheese & crackers, and beef jerky sticks. Please refrain from sending candy or sugary items, as they do not provide lasting energy.

Coats

We like to get the students outside any time it is above 20 degrees. Please make sure that your child has a coat.  Keep in mind that students will be going out in the morning, mid day, and afternoon. These times differ greatly when it comes to temperatures ranging from 30s to 60s.

Arno Dress Code

  • No ripped or torn jeans/shorts that reveal skin or underwear underneath.
  • Shorts/Skirts/Dresses need to be at fingertip length.
  • Tank Tops need to be at a minimum of “2 Fingers Wide”
  • No Belly Shirts
  • No inappropriate objects or language on shirts.
  • No Flip flops, open toes, or sandals.
  • No hats or hoods indoors, outside only before or after school.
  • No purses or body bags to be worn in school.
  • No makeup or fake nails

Note: Coats are not to be worn in the building, so students should dress in layers in case they become too cold or hot throughout the day.

Cell Phone/Smart Watches

We understand that your student(s) may have a cell phone or smart watch for after school communication with a parent or guardian. We ask that all cell phones/smart watches stay in backpacks during the school day to allow your students to focus on their academics, until students are outside at the end of the day. If a student has their phone out or if they are wearing their watch during the school day, our staff will take the phone/watch until the end of the day or bring it to the front office. This is to prevent any videos or photos being taken during the school day or text messages being sent.

During School Appointments

We realize that doctor appointments during school time are unavoidable. We ask that these be scheduled 2:00 or later to avoid prime learning time. Thank you.
