Week of May 30th…

Kudos to These Kiddos!           peanuts

Testing is DONE! Woohoo! Testing was long and the weather was hot, but these students persevered! Way to go! NWEA/MAP (Measures of Academic Progress) scores went home Friday on blue paper. DRA (Developmental Reading Assessment) scores also went home on yellow paper. Please keep an eye out for these two handouts.

Field Day

Wednesday, June 1st is Field Day. Please send your child to school with proper attire: shorts, shirt (not white), socks, and tennis shoes. The weather forecast is looking to be hot. Because our scheduled time is in the afternoon, there is no need to send your child with a change of clothes.

Summer Reading Program

Summer is just around the corner…at least that’s what these energetic students and the hot weather are telling me.

Do you have plans to keep your child from falling victim to “summer slide”? Well, Arno is again having a read-a-thon this year! What a great way for students to use technology in an educational way. Students will receive login information Tuesday, May 31st to access the designated website. Students will log their minutes/books as they read, and can also collect donations from friends and family. 85 % of funds raised will go to provide resources for our ever-changing curriculum. This summer read-a-thon begins June 1st. Let’s Get Reading!

Please click on the videos below to see how it works:

Weekly Reading & Math

No Weekly Reading! Begin reading for the read-a-thon.

Every Monday your child should bring home a math homework paper. The math worksheet will be a review of concepts already covered in the classroom. Students should be able to do the work independently. However, if you notice your child is struggling with a concept, please help him/her.

Absent Work/ Late Assignments

I will be accepting absent work or late assignments until May 31st. Any work assigned prior to May 30th that is not turned in by May 31st will not be accepted. Absences after May 27th will happen, but please encourage your child to complete all assignments on time. As the year winds down, time is very limited in preparing report cards and should not be used to correct papers that were not turned in on the due date. Please encourage your child to be respectful of my time.

Book Clubs

This past week the students began meeting in their book clubs. They really seem to be taking ownership of their learning, and are counting on their peers participation in discussion to help comprehend the reading passages. We are currently reading the following books:

Stone Fox Top Secret Warm Place Panda       Justin

It’s That Time…Progress Reports

Normally at progress report time I would send home a stapled packet listing all of the assignments with scores, missing assignments, and overall standard grades. As the third graders prepare for fourth grade, I also feel responsible to get YOU ready for fourth grade. So, with that in mind, you can access your child’s progress online through Parent Connect. This has been available to you all year and will continue to be a valuable resource in the upcoming grade levels.

I will send home your child’s updated DRA scores and NWEA (MAP) scores as they are administered and compiled. Please look for these documents to come home on colored paper within the next couple of weeks.

If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me. This school year will be over before we know it!

Spelling

Our Spelling format changed this past week. The students are acclimating to the new routine and expectations. Your child is assigned to one of the four spelling group lists posted in the sidebar of this blog. To keep up-to-date in your child’s list, please look for a sheet to go home every Monday with your child’s group list highlighted. Groups are determined according to a pre-assessment which allows a student to work at his/her ability while also being appropriately challenged. Students will practice their spelling word patterns throughout the week with activities involving word sorts, pyramid spelling, sentences, rhymes, synonyms, antonyms, etc. Spelling tests will remain on Fridays.

Mystery Reader

Thank you, Mrs. Stallions, for coming in and sharing The Rainbow Fish book with us. She also provided rainbow goldfish crackers and a coloring sheet to go along with the theme.

Our last assembly was a hit! The students sang, danced, and exercised while learning about how to respect their bodies by eating healthy foods.
