PBIS Expectations

Within the whirlwind of the first week of school, we discussed and practiced our PBIS (Positive Behavior Interventions and Support) expectations for the office, classroom, hallway, bathrooms, playground, and cafeteria. The students came up with many examples, as well as non-examples, of expected behavior at all of these locations. We are confident that our third graders will continue to be respectful, responsible, and safe throughout the coming months. Students who continue with great behavior throughout the year will be rewarded weekly and monthly.

Math in Focus Chapter 1: Numbers to 10,000

Students have learned how to count, read, and write numbers up to 1,000 in Grade 2. In this chapter, students will learn how to count, read, and write numbers up to 10,000. Base-ten blocks are used to develop the association the physical representation of the number, the number symbol, and the number word. Base-ten blocks also support students in counting by ones, ten, hundreds, and thousands.

Students are shown concrete representations with place-value charts and strips showing thousands, hundreds, tens, and ones for numbers to 10,000. Given any 4-digit number, students will identify the place value of each digit in the number, and express the number in standard, word, and expanded forms. Students are encouraged to compare and verbally describe sets of numbers using the terms least and greatest. Using these skills, they will write numbers in increasing or decreasing order. Finally, students will apply the number and place-value concepts to identify and complete number patterns and find missing numbers on a number line.

English Language Arts

In third grade we will use an anchor text for 2 weeks. In the first week, students will use the text to build vocabulary knowledge as well as utilize comprehension strategies. Both vocabulary knowledge and understanding of the text will be assessed on the first Friday. The second week will focus on spelling, grammar, and writing skills. Spelling words and grammar will be assessed on the second Friday of our story. In addition, students will explore phonetic patterns each week. Please note that vocabulary and spelling words are listed in the graphic below.

Social Studies

Our third grade social studies curriculum involves the study of Michigan.  To enhance our learning, we will have the Metro Parks of Michigan come out to present to our students.  The programs “People of the Three Fires,” “French Voyageurs,” and “Timber!” fit well into our curriculum and are very appropriate for third graders.  Through their mobile learning center, all of these programs are available to come to our school so that we do not have to pay the transportation expense.  The presenters bring materials that enhance the learning for the theme.

The cost for all three presentations will be a total of $5 per child.  There is no permission slip or chaperones necessary because we are not leaving the school grounds.

The Huron-Clinton Mobile Learning Center will be here on October 28th for the “People of the Three Fires” presentation, November 30th for the “French Voyageurs” presentation, and December 16th for “Timber!”. Please turn in $5 by October 4th so we can secure our reserved dates.

A special thank you to the Allen Park Presbyterian Church for a donation to bring down the cost of the presentations.

Weekly Reminders

  1. Students should bring charged chromebooks to school each day.
  2. Water bottles are helpful to stay hydrated. These should only contain plain water.
  3. Wear rubber-soled tennis shoes on gym days in order to participate.
  4. Students may bring a small snack to enjoy before recess. The snack should be one portion due to limited eating time.
  5. If it is supposed to sprinkle or light rain, we will still be going outside. Your child may want to bring an umbrella or wear a rain coat on these days.
