English Language Arts

In third grade we will use an anchor text for 2 weeks. In the first week, students will use the text to build vocabulary knowledge as well as utilize comprehension strategies to understand the text. Both vocabulary knowledge and understanding of the text will be assessed on the first Friday. The second week will focus on spelling, grammar, and writing skills. Spelling words and grammar will be assessed on the second Friday of our story. In addition, students will explore phonetic patterns each week. Please note that vocabulary words are listed in the graphic below.

October Super Cougars

Introducing October’s Super Cougars! Katie, Sophia, and Sundus have proven to be safe, responsible, and respectful students in third grade. They earned Culver’s lunch with Mr. Zielinski. We are so proud of them!

Reflections

All third graders had previously worked on a writing piece using the theme “I am hopeful because…”. 

“I am hopeful because…” is also the theme for the Reflections contest this year. If your child would like to submit his/her writing for the Reflections contest, please sign and return the consent form (it is going home on Monday, 11/13). If your child participates in the Reflections contest, he/she will earn 2 extra credit points on this writing assignment. We are pleased to see so many being returned for submission.

Message from the Green Team

We came in 4th place this year for the Clean Water Contest and just missed the $1000 prize by less than 30 votes.  We did get a $250 wild card cash prize for our participation though.  Thank you to all of you who voted for Arno and pledged to help keep our local waterways clean!  We will use the $250 to help with courtyard cleanup this spring.

M-STEP Practice Tests - Edulastic

 

Dear Third Grade Families,

Your child will be taking the M-STEP assessment this Spring. M-STEP is a 21st Century online test. It is designed to gauge how well students are mastering state standards. In order to help prepare your child to do his/her best on this state assessment, we have some planned activities that take place both at home and at school.

Starting on Friday, November 3rd, or Monday, November 6th, third graders should have brought home or will bring home 10 M-STEP vocabulary words to study at home and an extra credit crossword puzzle. If students complete and return the extra credit crossword puzzle, they will earn 1 extra credit point on the quiz. On Fridays, the students will be quizzed on these words. Starting in late January, after the students have had time to get use to studying for the words and taking the quiz- when your child earns a 80% or better on Friday’s quiz, he/she will earn a charm for his/her M-STEP charm necklace, which is an ongoing reflection of their accomplishments. Every Friday your child will bring home M-STEP vocabulary words and he/she will be quizzed on the following Friday.

Next week in the classroom, we will begin to use an online reading program called ReadWorks. Readworks is a program that requires reading, answering multiple choice questions, and written responses. Readworks passages and questions are similar to what will appear on the M-STEP. 

Also, after the students take the Winter NWEA assessment (end of January/early February), students who reach their personal growth goal will be rewarded during an assembly. 

Starting on Friday, December 1st, your child’s weekly homework will be M-STEP practice packets. If your child earns 80% or better on their M-STEP practice weekly homework, they will also earn a charm towards their M-STEP charm necklace. Homework packets will be sent home on Friday and will be due back to school by the next Thursday.

Big Ideas Math Chapter 5: Patterns and Fluency

In this chapter, your student is learning about patterns and fluency. We are using multiplication tables to solve problems and find patterns. One way to find numbers to work with is a number hunt! Look for numbers and groups of items in real life as a reason for using a multiplication table.

• Print out a copy of the multiplication table with factors 1 through 10. Challenge your student to find numbers in everyday life that are listed on the multiplication table. For example, your student might say that there are 63 students in third grade. Ask your student, “What is the quotient of 63 divided by 7?” On their multiplication table, ask them to find 63 in the row of 7. Then ask, “In what column is 63?” Have them explain how this helps them find 63 ÷ 7.

• Make it fun for your student! Challenge them to find several numbers in everyday life. Then, ask them a multiplication or division question related to each number. Encourage them to then solve the question using their multiplication table. For every question they answer correctly, color in the number they found. Consider rewards for correct answers.

• Point out the bicycle rack at your local park. Ask, “How many wheels do these bikes have?” Encourage your student to think of how they can use their multiplication table to answer the question.

• Encourage your student to look for patterns in the multiplication table. Ask, “Which numbers are the same? Do they have the same or different factors? What can you conclude?”

By the end of this chapter, your student should feel confident using a multiplication table and using patterns to solve problems. Encourage your student to use their multiplication table to solve multiplication and division questions. Have a great time scavenger hunting!

Parent Teacher Conferences

Conferences will be on Wednesday, November 8th (5:00-7:30p.m.) and Thursday, November 9th (12:45-3:15p.m. & 5:00-7:30p.m.). Please sign up for only one conference time per child. Because conferences are scheduled in 15 minute increments, please be respectful of others and arrive on time.

If you are unable to attend conferences, please send a note or email to your child’s teacher notifying them that you will not be able to attend conferences.

Halloween Festivities

On Tuesday, October 31st, the third graders will be enjoying Halloween with possible activities such as watching a short movie, making a craft, and reading/listening to stories. We also felt that a festive treat would be a great addition. If you are able to provide any of the requested items, please sign up below. Please send any donated items to school the day before our celebration. If you are unable to click on a particular item, the item may no longer be needed. Many thanks to those who have already signed up to send in a donation.

Please also remember that students should wear costumes to school. (Please no weapon props or masks.) Our costume parade will take place outside (pending weather) at 10:00. Please be ready with your cameras during the parade and after school. Parents will not be entering the classroom throughout the day.Thanks so much for your cooperation!

Third grade’s focus is earning trophies as students navigate their learning path. Students are encouraged to earn 2 trophies in the area of reading. Trophies are earned by completing a Progress Check with 80% or higher. Students know how to check if they met their trophy goal.

 

Big Ideas Math Chapter 4: Division Facts and Strategies

In this chapter, your student is learning about division facts and strategies.

The lessons address division strategies for numbers 0 to 10. These strategies include using arrays and using the relationship between multiplication and division to solve division equations.
The vocabulary words associated with this chapter are: dividend, divisor, quotient, and fact family. One way you can model division is with money. Counting and dividing spare change is a great place to start when it comes to learning division!

When talking about money with your student, use the following strategies:

• To model division, spread out a large quantity of quarters on a table. Make sure the number of quarters you set out is a multiple of 4. Ask your student to count the number of quarters. Then ask, “How many quarters do you need to make a dollar? How many dollars do these quarters equal?”

• Model other scenarios with different amounts and types of change. Encourage your student to think of division and multiplication equations that relate to these scenarios.

• To model division another way, show your student the change in your wallet. Then tell your student you need a specific amount of money in one type of coin: pennies, nickels, or dimes. Be sure that the amount (in cents) is a multiple of the value of the coin. You can ask questions such as, “How many nickels do I need to make 45 cents?”

• You can model arrays with coins. The arrays can be used to model division questions and help your student solve word problems. By the end of this chapter, your student should feel confident with the learning targets and success criteria on the next page. Encourage your student to think of other opportunities related to money to use division contexts, such as dividing leftover change equally among a group of people.

The report card will be marked accordingly. Students should be completing a session of ReflexMath daily. We try to fit it in during the school day, but this is not always possible. NWEA Test Report

Your child recently received their NWEA Fall 2023 Family Report. The top of the report will help you decipher what your child’s score means. The student cut score for fall 2023 is 178. Students scoring below this cut score will receive an Individualized Reading Improvement Plan in the near future. An IRIP is a plan that teachers, parents, and students follow to promote good reading habits and classroom routines that will assist in academic growth.

 

Guidelines for Cold Weather Gear

In an effort to keep our students safe and healthy, please plan to send your child to school with the following gear based on morning temperatures. Please keep in mind that we do have an outside recess in the morning when the temperatures are much chillier than later in the day.

Big Ideas Math Chapter 3: More Multiplication Facts and Strategies

In this chapter, your student is learning strategies for multiplying by 3, 4, 6, 7, 8, and 9,
and for multiplying three factors. These strategies include how to use a model to multiply,
how to use the Distributive Property (with addition or subtraction) to multiply, and how to
use a problem-solving plan to solve multiplication word problems.

The vocabulary words associated with this chapter are: Distributive Property (with
addition), Distributive Property (with subtraction), and Associative Property of
Multiplication.

One time you can practice multiplication is when you and your student are shopping for
clothes! The racks and shelves are great models for practicing multiplication strategies.

• Check out the shelves at a shoe store. Pick a shelf that displays a row of shoe
boxes. Ask your student how many shoes (2) are in each box. Then ask, “How many
shoes are there on this shelf?” “How many shoes are on [x] number of shelves with
the same number of boxes?” This is an example of multiplying three factors, which
is covered in Lesson 3.7.

• For example: for 2 shoes per box, 5 boxes on each shelf, and 4 shelves, you have
(2 x 5) x 4.

• Ask how the answer is affected by regrouping as 2 x (5 x 4). Showing them that
the product stays the same demonstrates the Associative Property of
Multiplication.

• Model other scenarios with clothing items. For example, when browsing a rack of
shirts, ask, “If the store sells 3 shirts every week, how many shirts will the store
sell in three weeks?” You can model this scenario by moving nine shirts into three
equal groups of shirts. Encourage your student to think of multiplication equations
that can help solve the question.

By the end of this chapter, your student should feel confident with the learning targets. Encourage your student to think of other ways to use clothing items in multiplication contexts, such as how much money a store makes if the store sells a single item [x] number of times.
